Rooted in Practice, Growing in Purpose
Kristin Olson on Building a Life—and Studio—Rooted in Yoga
First, a belated Happy Father’s day to all the dads and father figures out there. I highly recommend this read of Dad texts in case you missed it; it’s full of heartwarming and hilarious gems.
Second, I had incorrectly posted a repeat episode of Damon Davis for his Sh*t Pile Episode, so please make sure you listen to his now-correct second episode. Links available here.
And now, back to the main event….
If any of you or your loved ones are wrestling with your own just a… story — just a writer, just a gardener, just a stay-at-home parent — I think you’ll really enjoy this week’s episodes with Home Yoga studio owner Kristin Olson.
Kristin’s story begins in high school. She had just read Siddhartha in her English class, and then curiosity led her to a Blockbuster shelf, where she purchased her first Ali McGraw yoga tape and began her practice.
Fast-forward: Kristin was working and teaching yoga, bouncing around between multiple studios and growing a following — all while wrestling with a nagging internal dialogue: You went to a top college and grad school—shouldn’t you be something more?
Prestige can be loud and demanding; but Kristin found her sense of purpose in being “just a yoga teacher” (her words). For Kristin, yoga became the compass that steered her away from a cubicle life and toward building a studio dedicated to fostering embodiment, connection, and a thriving sense of community. Her trajectory became life-sustaining and life-giving.
This conversation reminds us that meaningful work can emerge where unexpected blends of training, joy, and service overlap.
